The 2011 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships begin Wednesday at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minnesota where eight teams from the Tool City Volleyball Club will be competing. And it could be another promising year for Tool City.
Whether or not Tool City can bring home another national championship as it did in the 18-Club Division two years ago, remains to be seen. But overall, it could be a banner year. “If you look at our White teams, which are usually our second level teams, this is the best group of Whites we have ever sent,” said Tool City Volleyball Club pioneer Denny Patton. “I don’t know how they’ll do, but they can play their counterpart pretty tough in practice. “It will be interesting to see what happens.” Tool City 18 Orange and White start play Wednesday. The 18 Orange team is coached by Jim Brown and features All-District 10 first team selections Jason Amy of Saegertown, Meadville’s Ian Phillips, Cochranton’s Ty Sheehan and Josh Oertly and Cambridge Springs’ John Turner, the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association’s state championships defensive most valuable player Clay Dawson of Saegertown, Maplewood’s Christian Brown and Conneaut Valley’s Todd Lash. The 18 White squad is coached by McDowell head coach Dean Platz and features McDowell’s Dan Clark, Chris Mineo, Jake Keefer and Dave Rion, Cochranton’s Cole Graham and Justin Hering, Saegertown’s Casey Handel and Fort LeBoeuf’s Cody Stone.
The Tool City 14 Club Orange and White teams begin on Thursday. The Orange team is coached by Patton. Players are Cambridge Springs’ Jarred Ferris and Tyler Fieley, Maplewood’s Ryan Humes, Cochranton’s James Groover, Connor Staudt and Nate Wigton, Saegertown’s Trevor Pavlik and Meadville’s Kyle Rose. Nick Bancroft is coaching White squad of Maplewood’s Dane Barker, Jeremy Dahl, Dustin Delo and Jeremy Hope, Cochranton’s Zachary Ford, Saegertown’s Ryan Kirdahy and Joey Reynolds and Fort LeBoeuf’s Travis Pietkiewicz. Saturday marks the first play date for the 16 Orange and White teams. Fort LeBoeuf head coach Rob Cierniakoski coaches the Orange team of Maplewood’s Logan Battin, Cochranton’s Chad Eisenhooth, Logan Herzberger and Josh Vanderhoof, Saegertown’s Ross Ferguson and Meadville’s Matt Izbinski and Tyler Minnis. Cochranton’s Nick Dickson is also a member of the team, but will not play due to injury.
The 16 White team coached by Penn State Behrend women’s volleyball assistant coach Gerry Vensel consists of McDowell’s Ryan Calhoun, Cody Meyer and Luke Vensel, Cochranton’s Alex Custead and Nate Roche, Meadville’s Tom Leech and Mark Miller and Conneaut Valley’s Tanner McCauley. Tool City’s last groups — the 17 Club Orange and White — start on Sunday.
Patton said Tool City’s strongest team this year is the 17 Orange team, which is coached by Saegertown head coach Justin Johnson, who led Tool City 18 Orange to the national title in 2009 and the Panthers to the PIAA Class AA state title match this year. Team members are: Maplewood’s Zak Dennis, Meadville’s Travis Jensen and Alex Minnis, Saegertown’s Dustin Pavlik, Shane Rigby and Connor Shorts, Cambridge Springs’ Geoff VanWinkle and Conneaut Valley’s Nolan Varee. Ryan Malliard coaches the 17 White team of Maplewood’s Austin Acel, Justin Dahl, Noah Kane and Dean Lewis, McDowell’s Ben Boncella and Jesse Bloomster and Saegertown’s Greg Bras.
