Contents. Introduction (short for Morrowind Graphics Extender) improves the graphics of Morrowind. It includes features like 16:9 aspect ratio, v-sync, and distant land. It is only recommended for use on more modern/powerful computers, as the improvements come at the cost of considerable FPS hit.
Laptops with integrated graphic cards have especially hard time running it. The program has in-built MWSE (Morrowind Script Extender), so you don't need to use its standalone version.
Using the Morrowind plugins package 'Morrowind Overhaul' and Morrowind Graphics Extender, you can quite easily create a game on par and even superior to Oblivion in. Morrowind is the third installment in the Elder Scrolls series. The game takes place on the island of Vvardenfell, a district in the Dunmeri province of Morrowind. It is smaller in scope than the previous games in the main series, Daggerfall and Arena, yet much more detailed. This epic, open-ended RPG allows for a wide variety of character designs and play styles. The game continues to be sold on store shelves ten years after its initial release, partially due to the widespread mod community which has the potential to supply Morrowind with new content in perpetuity. Explanation of Guide This is Part 1 of a list of mods for Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind + Expansions. For those of you who have not played Morrowind before, I recommend you only use this part of the guide. Morrowind's strength lies in the unique and immersive world it's created and ability to inspire others to further improve upon and add to it. Despite this, Morrowind should be experienced as close to its vanilla form as possible by first time players. Just as you wouldn't throw seasoning on a dish you've never tried, you shouldn't mod a game you haven't tried. So stick to the Official Plugins and bug fixes.
Setting Up the Game Installation Installation is fairly straightforward, but there are a few key things to remember. Avoid installing the game in the Program Files directory. This can cause some issues for some people. I personally use Windows 7 and have had no issues using the Program Files (x86) directory on the two computers I have installed the game on. I have a feeling this primarily applies to users of Windows Vista, but I'm not sure.
Just be aware that using the Program Files directory may cause issues. If you aren't using the Game of the Year Edition of the Game install the official patches.
These patches were created by Bethesda. Those of you who use Steam won't need to do this. Create a Documents folder in both your Morrowind folder and you Data Files folder. This isn't 100% necessary, but I highly recommend it. The grand majority of the mods and utilities for Morrowind that you will find include readmes, documents explaining the contents of the mod or utilities, compatibility issues it may have, and general information on its use.
Reading a mod's readme and all information you can find on a mod (reviews, online descriptions, comments, etc) is extremely important. It won't always be necessary, but it's a good habit and can help one to avoid major issues down the road. Tweaking the Morrowind.ini The Morrowind.ini in your Morrowind folder allows you to change various in game settings. Tweaking these settings can increase performance, alter how areas are loaded, change the lighting and much more. Before diving in and tweaking the folder, it is advised that you create a backup of the file. This way if you screw up all is not lost. To tweak your Morrowind.ini, I follow.
Scroll down to the black text, and read carefully. Knot on his modding guide recommends some alternate lighting settings. Use these settings instead of those on the previously linked guide.

The Morrowind community has done a great job of tracking down and fixing them, and the following patches have been created in order to correct them.
Patching the Morrowind.exe + Hrnchamd's Morrowind Code Patch was created as a way for fixing things in Morrowind that could not be fixed through the Construction Set, Bethesda's tool for creating mods. This patch fixes a massive number of issues in Morrowind and also allows some optional changes. The description on the download page explains the changes it makes as well as the optional changes. There's also a beta that you should install.
It adds some new useful fixes and some new options as well. In order to install the patch, open the file and extract its contents to your Morrowind folder. Merge folders when prompted. Repeat this for the beta version, but replace files when prompted. Then, simply open the Code Patch, and select the items that appeal to you.
For new players, I don't recommend too many game mechanic changes until your more familiar with the game. Also, if you took my advice and created a document folder in your Morrowind folder and Data files folder, drag the readmes into the document folder in your Morrowind folder. This way, you have all the readmes in one spot for reference, in case you screw something up or want to check back on it later. This utility patches the Morrowind.exe in order to prevent CTDs and general performance. Install it in the same manner that you did the Morrowind Code Patch. Once installed, open the file and move over to the Benchmarker tab.
Disable benchmark patches and return to the Main tab. Click 'Find Morrowind Manually', find your Morrowind folder, and click 'OK'. Click 'Patch Morrowind' and it will begin patching your Morrowind.exe. Once it's done, close out of it and you're all done. This utility let's Morrowind run more better on your computer. Install it just as you did the other utilities in your Morrowind folder. Once loaded, a window will come up.
Select your Morrowind.exe and run the patch. Modding Patches The rest of the patches out there fall into this category. They're either replacement meshes or plugins deigned to fix issues not relating to the coding of the game. To install these follow. As before, I recommend you put all your readmes for mods in a Documents folder in your Data Files.
It's extremely useful having them there just in case. This fixes a whole host of bugs in Morrowind and its expansions.
Most people use BTB's version of the patch. However, the patch recently got an update by Quorn. This update requires the meshes, textures, and other assets from the previous version of the patch which can be found.
The latest version can be found linked in the title of this section. Don't use the.esm files from BTB's version. You only need the one from the latest version. This mod corrects an issue in the rumor that starts the Bloodmoon main quest. Install it as you would any other mod. This mod causes the city of Sadrith Mora to function as it was intended to.
Now the acquisition of Hospitality Papers is necessary in order to take use of the goods and services there. This causes the Tribunal Main Quest to start at a more reasonable time. This mod repairs Fort Frostmoth as the Bloodmoon main quest progresses. + + + + + + and + + + and + These mods fix various issues and glitches with regards to the meshes of various objects in Morrowind. There is no.esp or.esm included in these mods. Simply extract and merge like you would any other mod. + + + and These mods correct issues with object placement.
No longer will objects be floating or out of place. You'll run into issues with the patch if you don't remove the extra space between Fix and 1.2. There's also an error that comes up with this mod when it loads that can be safely ignored. In order to remove this error you'll have to use Wrye Mash (later on in guide) to update the master file.
You can also just open it up in the construction set and press save. Spirithawke who made the patch for this mod also made several other mesh fixes. To install this one, drag the file into the 'i' folder in your Meshes folder.
To install this one, drag it into your textures folder. + + + These mods remove the seams that sometimes appear between different ground textures. PeterBitt has made a few small and very useful mods. Not all of them are fixes however, so for now only use the Collision Fix (don't overwrite for this one), Fireshield Icon Fix, Grahl Eye Fix, Scroll Fix, Skaal Holly, Legion Uniforms, Electric Slaughterfish, and No Resting in Ald Velothi. This mod corrects inconsistencies between the appearance of certain ingredients in gameplay and dialogue.
+ This fixes the buggy knockout animations of the Nix Hound and Hunger. This mod makes the wells in Morrowind fit in with the place that they are located.
Put the 'x' folder in your mesh folder. Official Plugins Bethesda developed a number of extra plugins for Morrowind. These plugins can be found. Utilities This utility helps fix the issues that arise when mods aren't properly sorted. It also provides useful information on certain plugins. To install download the standalone version (lowest download button), extract to your Morrowind folder. Also, download the the Mlox data and drag it into your Mlox folder.
Replace when prompted. To use it open the Mlox app and click update load order.
The only issue with Mlox is that it doesn't recognize the latest version of the Morrowind Patch Project. This can be safely ignored, or if it bugs you enough you can simply rename the patch project to 'Morrowind Patch 1.6.5 Beta (BTB Edit)'. Either way, your game should work fine. This useful utility does a whole host of things including cleaning saves, updating the master file dependencies of a mod, merging leveled lists, and much more. It can also act as a mod manager, but I recommend installing mods manually.
I find it's simpler, and I have more control. Check out the for more information. BSAs are large archives of meshes and textures that are registered through the Morrowind.ini. Bethesda used them to hold all the vanilla data for Morrowind and its expansions.
Certain mods also take use of this type of archive. The most prominent example of this is Tamriel Rebuilt. This utility helps register them for you. This way you don't have to edit the Morrowind.ini manually. You simply put the utility in your Data Files folder, open it up, and it will makes sure everything is the way it needs to be.
+ This does a lot of different things. It allows you to extend your draw distance past the original vanilla values, lets you play at a higher resolution, adds shaders, complex scripting, and much more. Even if you don't want the updated graphics, the resolution fix makes it worth the download. Install the beta as well. It adds a few stability updates, makes some changes to the interface, and improves performance. Install it in your Morrowind folder and merge when prompted.
Read the descriptions on Nexus before use. For now, use the autoFOV and select your screen resolution. Tes3cmd This utility is wonderful for cleaning mods. It is a command prompt that once installed allows you to clean mods very quickly. Many popular mods still require some cleaning before use and this utility is wonderful for that.
Hey guys, sorry for the delay. I've been rather busy lately. This is the first part of the second version of the guide linked in the sidebar.
I'm also considering not including MGSO in my guide. A lot of the mods I want to include require a bit of extra fiddling in order to get to work with MGSO.
I'd also just like those of you who will use this guide to be more aware of the various little mods that go into it, and MGSO, although it includes a credits section, it isn't super specific as to what it did. It's like an inventory of parts but contains no schematics which makes modifying it a bit more interesting.
An update will come some time later, but I can't promise when. I'll try to get it out as soon as I can. Could you give an example of what sort of fiddling is required to make certain things work? I ask because as far as I know, MGSO is pretty much only graphics and maybe animations, depending on what you select when installing it.
I've been using it with Galsiah's Character Development ever since Knots' site went down a while back because I've been much too lazy to spend the time downloading the various mods listed in guides like this. Doing so usually ends up in a much higher quality outcome though, so I look forward to the next part. If you want to use the latest Better Bodies armor mod requires that you modify either MGSO's Better Weapons and Armor or the Better Morrowind Armor mod in order for them to work.
MGSO's Dremora use the vanilla chest armor texture, but Darknut's upgraded texture version for the rest of the armor. It also uses the vanilla style of daedric armor instead of the new hi-res, reflective, armor that is available to the player. The inside of Daedric ruins has an awkward glow to some meshes similar to Morrowind's original saran wrap look on enchanted items.
Soul gems are inconsistent with their icons, and the latest update of the Morrowind Code Patch requires you restore your original Morrowind.exe and rerun the exeOptimizer and the 4gb patch. If you want to go back and change an option you selected in MGSO, there's a high likely hood that you'll get some errors.
This is even more likely if you've gone and tweaked something. Then there are the various community patches for errors in MGSO, and these are just the things I can think of off the top of my head. I'd like my mod list to be something I can 100% approve of, and I want those using it to be aware of what they are doing to their game. MGSO is useful, but I want a greater level of control.
I agree with you not including MGSO. Maybe it's my nostalgia goggles, but the old graphics are so much better. When I use face packs, even Westly's, I feel like everyone in Vvardenfell is about to go to the beauty pageant. I love seeing the older, dust covered faces. They have a cartoonish feel to them that replacers just can't pull off. IMO the MGSO is a clusterfuck.
It looks pretty at first but it's overkill and is very jarring. The only thing I pull from it really are vurt's less branchy ashland trees which go amazing with vanilla. I would like to take the scum texture too but it just doesn't fit in right. You replace one thing, and you typically end up replacing everything. Throw some 16x AA and shaders on the vanilla textures, and if you can afford it the per pixel lighting and exponential fogging. DONE FRIGGIN DEAL.
Then there's the distant lands. Which make Vvardenfell tiny as fuck.
I played with this for a long time and settled on 3 cells with 2.5 cells for fog/statics. To me Morrowind is supposed to be a dry, foggy, dying place.
What with all the dust storms and all. But yeah, I like the direction you're heading with this.
Morrowind Installation Directory
There's several other good 'fixes' to consider. Mesh Fix, Better Meshes, Mesh Improvements (all compatible with Mesh Fix installed first), Telvanni UV mapping, correct UV rocks and trees, off the top of my head.
Install Setup Exe
The animations in MGSO are pretty much game breaking. They make one-handed weapon wielding opponents attack at half speed, but you're still attacking at full because you don't have to wait for a third person animation to finish every swing. I'll stop now. I'll still include graphics mods in my list later on, but I'll try to show the various options that are out there and try to keep it all as lore friendly as possible. Morrowind's strength is it's ability to inspire creativity in modders and the imagination of its players. The modding community is a large part of the reason that the game still has the following it does and why there are extremely skilled modders out there trying to add the rest of Morrowind, Skyrim, Cyrodiil, and Elswyr to Morrowind.
Morrowind Setup
The thing with modding is that it allows you to craft your own unique version of the game. You simply pick the mods that work for you, and enjoy the game. With regards to the Mesh Improvements and Better Meshes, those mods I consider more along the lines of graphical updates as opposed to fixes. I forgot to include the Correct UV Rocks and Trees, so thanks for pointing those out. Also, with regards to the animation mod included in MGSO, I wasn't aware of the effects it had on movement speed. I'll have to look around online, and see if there's a fix for that.
It's the attack speed that gets fucked. There is no fix that I am aware of, but I came up with my own and abandoned it for some reason. I think it's more trouble than it's worth. The animation mod in MGSO is a compilation inside a compilation. If you dig deep enough you'll find the original mods that went into it, which you have to install with LizTail's animkit. This way you can pick and choose the anims you want to use (i.e. Delete the problem 1-handed anims).
Then you have to make sure you use the 'fix animations' button on the animkit program, or you will get errors every time you load mods that add new NPC's. This is because for some reason the program adds an invisible tail bone to every model. Apparently you can delete them in nifskope but. Like I said, fuck it.
