Good morning, We've been generating pdf reports with a third party control for about 4 years now. With the release of Reader 10.1.4 (IIRC) our clients started having problems reading the pdfs and we confirmed the behavior. Initially, it seemed that version 11 of the reader fixed this issue, but once again our clients are still having problems. They are getting the same insufficient data for image error that was endemic with the older version of the reader. I've been able to open our reports without problems in other pdf readers, just not Acrobat Reader.

We haven't changed our image compression or report generation controls or code, so I'm wondering if the problem, whatever it is, still exists in this new version. I cannot post one of these reports on a public forum, but I could send it along, most likely with an NDA, to a responsible party at Adobe for investigation.

Thanks, Matthew. I have cleaned up my system using the recovery tools supplied with my computer. OS is an XP updated to SP 3. The recovered system included an install of Acrobat Reader 6.0.

I tried to update to version 7.0 using the Readers own update-function. The installer/updater gave me this mysterious error right away when, I think, it was still unpacking files: 'Error 1325.Documents is not a valid short file name.' The same happened when I tried to uninstall the same Reader 6.0.

And it happened again as I was trying to install 8.0 manually and the same with installing the new 9.0. I somehow got my hands on Acrobat cleanup utility, I ran it, but I was still not able to uninstall version 6.0. I ran also Windows' own registry cleanup utility, deleting all registries of Reader 6.0. That, probably, worked and Reader 6.0 was disappeared from the list of programs (Add/remove programs).

Afterwards I was able to delete all visible files of Acrobat Reader 6.0: from Program Files, Common Files and Documents and Settings Application data. No sight of Acrobat Reader 6.0 on my computer but still the problem persists when trying to install newer versions, eg. Reader 9.0 reports the error just a second after the installer is launched. Where to start? Thanks, Raymond.

Acrobat Reader recently stopped working for me on my Windows 8 computer (I double-click on PDF files to open them, nothing happens). So I uninstalled and tried to re-install the latest version (XI 11.0).

I am running the installer program as Administrator (this is a home computer, I am the only user on the machine). The install stops with Error 1303 'The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C: Program Files (X86) Adobe Reader 11.0 Reader.

The installation cannot continue. Log on as an administrator or contact your system administrator.' If I open Explorer and try to navigate to that folder, I see it there under the Reader 11.0 folder, but if I double-click I cannot even open it, I get an 'is not accessible. Access is denied' error. I checked the Security settings on the Reader 11.0 folder, SYSTEM, Administrators, Users, and TrustedInstaller all have Full Control. When I go into Advanced and check the box for 'Replace all child permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object' and click Apply, I get an error for the Reader folder (Failed to enumerate objects in the container. Access is denied').

I tried deleting the Adobe folder on down, hoping I could just start fresh with the re-install, but it does not allow me to. Completely stuck.

Hi, There are several cases where I have scanned in a document on a Konica Minolta c203 or c451 and have been unable to open the file in Acrobat v9.5.

The document fails to open with 'Insufficient data for an image' error. I'm using Windows XP sp3.

As a test, I used a original install of Acrobat 9.0. With this installation, the document opened without any problems. When I had Acrobat update to 9.2, I was no longer able to open the same file. I received the 'Insufficient data for an image' error. I performed the next up to v9.5 and still have the same issue. I've read the other entries about this error, but there does not seem to be an agreement on how to fix it other than possible downgrading to v8.x or upgrading to v10.x.

Is this the only option? Any other ideas? I'm not sure. This one in particular has changed to some extent every time since it was first available with Acrobat 8: For future reference: A7: Comments Enable for Commenting and Analysis in Adobe Reader A7: Tools Typewriter Enable Typewriter tool in Adobe Reader A8: Advanced Enable Usage Rights in Adobe Reader A9: Advanced Extend Features in Adobe Reader A10: File Save As Reader Extended PDF Enable Additional Features A11: File Save as Other Reader Extended PDF Enable More Tools (includes form fill-in save).

Thank you for your understanding. Karen Hu TechNet Community Support. I have some question to ask about Adobe acrobat reader and Adobe acrobat professional. Is it possible if I use Adobe Acrobat reader to input data in PDF file that is generated by interactive form using web dynpro or Abap program.

I try to use acrobat reader. It can not input anything into PDF Form but I'm not sure it may be can or not. After I change PC that is install Adobe Acrobat Professional (offline: I save pdf file form web browser). It can input data into PDF Form. Plese let me understand. Thank you very much. 1) You only need a Adobe Reader (Version 7.0.9 or higher) to enter and Save data in Adobe form.

Just install the latest version of Adobe reader (8.x) Additional Installations on the Client PC 2) Please make sure you are creating Interactive Forms, and not Print Forms. For example, if you're using Java Web Dynpro, you need to enter the following code to make the form Interactive (so data can be saved within): IWDInteractiveForm iForm1 = (IWDInteractiveForm) view.getElement('name of your form here'); iForm1.setDynamicPDF(true). Environment: LiveCycle ES 8.0.1 (SP1 not applied).

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SQL Server 2000 I need to get an extended PDF file to reliably connect to SQL Server 2000 and run arbitrary SQL statements using whatever domain credential the local machine is logged in with from Reader. I'm so far getting very mixed success. I've read in the designer docs that the security model is updated with Reader 8, so I'm making sure to clone the connection before I work on it, e.g.: var oDB = xfa.sourceSet.spEmp.clone(1); var nDBIndex = 0; while(oDB.nodes.item(nDBIndex).className!= 'command') nDBIndex; oDB.nodes.item(nDBIndex).query.select.nodes.item(0).value = 'EXEC EmployeeNames '+xfa.resolveNode('form1.#subform0.TextField1').rawValue+'; oDB.open; It also says that the file must be certified. I've created and used an internal CA to create a signing credential, and I've imported the CA as a trusted root into all the copies of Reader where I've tried the file. When I viewed the certified version there was also a warning about the date/time being from the local users machine, so I've also timestamped the document using and imported the relevant certs, and I get a full pass for validation.

Un-certified version of Reader Extended PDF file: Reader 8 on XP - 'Connection for Source spEmp failed because the environment is not trusted'. (expected, due to new security restrictions) Reader 8 on Vista (Acrobat also installed) - no error, appears to connect to database (yes/no dialog appears), but no data is retrieved and displayed on the form. Reader 8 on Server 2003 - 'Connection for Source spEmp failed because the environment is not trusted'. (expected, due to new security restrictions) Certified version, trusted CA, timestamped(trustedvalidated): Reader 8 on XP - fails silently, no attempt to connect to db. Reader 8 on Vista (Acrobat also installed) - works perfectly Reader 8 on Server 2003 (Acrobat also installed) - fails silently, no attempt to connect to db.

Has anyone had any success running arbitrary SQL statements in a Reader Extension ES enabled PDF file using the logged in Windows user credentials, and what did you do differently? Also does Acrobat being installed on a machine with Reader affect the security model?

All my pictures.jpeg have been converted to PDFs and when I click on them I get the following error message: Adobe Reader could not open because it is either not a supported file or because the file has been damaged (example, it was sent as an email attachment wasn't coded correctly.) I am trying to open them from the File Explorer /pictures/ and the 'Type' column reads Adobe Acrobat. I have never changed any.jpegs into adobe. When I open Reader and look at Pic File Folder nothing shows up. This seemed to have happened some time in the last couple of weeks.

I am using Win 8, all up to date, ASUS laptop, Chrome. Hello, My Acrobat Reader crashes frequently. I've uninstalled it, confirmed my system exceeds the system requirements, and installed it again. When it crashes, I receive an error message about something called Data Execution Prevention (DEP). Does anyone know if Adobe has a DEP-compatible version of Acrobat Reader X?

Or how I can ask Adobe directly? Has anyone experienced similar issues?

Do you have any other light to shine? Thank you; I am just finding my way around here, so please forgive me if these questions are really basic and/or ought to be unnecessary. Anne Marie. I appreciate the response.

Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium (copyright 2007, Service Pack 2) - When it crashes, the message is 'Adobe Reader has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.'

- The next one is: Adobe Reader was closed. Then, a longer message comes up near the program icon at the bottom strip across my window, about the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) - it is one of those that is only there fleetingly, and I cannot copy it down in time before it disappears. However it contains a link to an FAQ about Data Execution Prevention (DEP).

I gather that Windows feels obligated to close the program for one of two reasons: either security has been breeched (I ruled that out) OR there's an issue with how/what part of my system's memory is being accessed. I have had a closer look at the document, and it appears as if the image on page 2 is somewhat corrupted. Then I have done the following opened the image with Photoshop; PS seems to have corrected the image.saved the image as a PSD fileopened the damaged image from the PDF with Illustratorreplaced the image with the corrected image from Photoshopsaved the image back into the original PDF; the PDF can now be successfully opened I have sent you the corrected PDF via Acrobat.com Workspaces to your email address. Now of course I am aware that this did not solve the problem for you. But it did, to me at least, prove that the document contained a damaged image. I can see that the document was created with Corel Draw X5.

Now the big question is: is it a problem of Corel Draw, or Adobe Reader / Acrobat 11.0.3? Have you tried to contact Corel about the issue?

Hello, I'm not fully confident this is the best place for this, but I'll start here. Note that this is NOT the same as the issue that was recently fixed in Reader 11 (found at I am using the command 'ps2pdf' (using Ghostscript) to convert postscript files to PDF.

To get better quality, I use the ps2pdf options '-dAutoFilterColorImages=false -dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode', which force lossless encoding for color images. However, there are images on certain pages that yield the error 'Insufficient data for an image' when opened in Adobe Reader XI (current version), and the image on that page is not viewable (or rather, it can be viewed, but only until you get the whole image on the screen; then the image disappears).

If the PDF is printed, the image will not print. The error also occurs in Acrobat 9.4.0, and possibly other versions. However, Reader 8 displays the files with no issues. Also, Foxit reader displays the PDF files fine. The postscript files are screenshots generated by the user dragging a box to define the area of the screen to be printed to file. This issue only occurs for some size boxes that the user draws; others come out fine and are read by Reader just fine.

This only happens when using FlateEncode; using lossy JPEG compression (e.g. The default ps2pdf output) does not yield files that produce the error. Here are some example files to demonstrate the issue (hey, maybe the issue is not even reproducible for other people! That would be helpful to know if true, so even if you can't help solve the problem, if you could verify whether this issue occurs when you open one of these files in Reader or Acrobat, it would awesome).

Bad pdf where error occurs: pdf (very similar, but slightly different box drawn): good and bad: If anyone has any ideas on this issue, I would greatly appreciate it. Or if you think this isn't the right place for this, and perhaps know of a better place for my question, I'd appreciate that too. Additional possibly relevant information: ps2pdf is being run using Ghostscript 8.15 on Unix Solaris 10. I also ran the same postscript files through ps2pdf (again using Ghostscript 8.15) on a Windows 7 machine, and the resulting PDFs did not exhibit the same errors when opened in Reader or Acrobat.Adobe Reader 8 and 11, and Foxit were run on Windows 7.

Acrobat 9.4.0 was run through a Citrix server, and I'm not sure what version of Windows it runs on.I tried lots of different options in ps2pdf, and also tried running the postscript through ghostscript directly (using the 'gs' command). When I opened it in Acrobat Reader 9, I got this error message Unable to locate the form, because the XFA data lacks a reference to the PDF document. If the data came back as a result of a submit from a PDF form, then the URL is probably missing #FDF at the end. I did some research online.

It seems that I can only open a PDF file in Acrobat Reader 9, but is it a way that allows me to open an xdp file in Acrobat Reader 9? The filled data is from a separate xml file.

Any help will be appreciated. Using Acrobat 9 Pro I created a form to capture personal info from donors to our non-profit. When displayed in Acrobat 9 the SUBMIT button works as intended (brings up a message to send using my Email client with the pdf attached and addressed to the Email I have entered in the URL block.) Using the SUBMIT button while in Reader 9 on another PC I receive the error message that 'this operation is not permitted'. My preferred solution would be to enable Reader to do the same as Acrobat 9. I understand that Reader cannot save a form. Since I am only collecting at most 9 small fields I could live with just getting the data from the forms. Since the donors may have various versions of Reader, I need a solution that does not require the latest versions of Reader (8 or 9) to do these actions.

For your application, e-mail is probably a bad idea. However, if you insist you should have the form submit a FDF or XML data file, not the PDF.

You can open the FDF and XML files in the original form to see the data if you desired. The data file submission is not limited to the 500 use limit of the form.

Due to the nature of the material, I would think it is much safer to submit the data to a web server and not through e-mail that is typically not very secure. A last note it that e-mail submission requires the client machine to be using MAPI.

If not, they will get an error and you will be blamed. Submitting to a web script avoids this issue. Hello I have a designed a PDF form using LiveCycle Designer 8. The form has a Submit button which on clicking invokes a Servlet sitting on a websphere server and then passes the data to the Servlet. The Servlet sends a TEXT/HTML response object. I am able to successfully the form data using Adobe Reader 9 and Acrobat 8.

However, when I try to submit the data using Adobe Reader 7, instantly I get an error message. The message just says 'ERROR 500'. Can someone please let me know what is going on here and how it can be corrected. I'll join the crowd with my experience today. Today one user received the 'Insufficient data for an image' error. From what I have read about the issue, one reason was upgrading to Ver 10.1.4.

The user who has the issue with version is 10.1.1 on XP Pro SP3. She informed another user who was able to print the document.

The person who could view the document correctly and print it has ver 10.1.4 on XP Pro SP3. The user who can view/print received the document in an email. The email was forwarded to me with the attachment. When I attempt viewing, the Insufficient. Message occurs. My version was 10.1.4 on Windows 7 SP1. So, reading the comments, I downloaded and installed Ver.

Guess what, it still has the same error. When I exit the reader it wants to save the update of the document. Interesting, because nothing was changed except the display was incorrect.

It did indicate a 2nd copy was created. Also, the reader should be able to do an update. Until a correction is available, I'll consider downgrading the software and/or find a freeware pdf viewer.

I will not upload the document. It is a contract with a customer is proprietory. Update: One image which did not appear was the company logo. I have an NT4.0 SP6a W2K SP4 PCs with Reader Ver 7.0. They would display the document but without the company logo in the upper right corner. The error meesage on these two PCs was 'There was an error while trying to parse an immage'.

Sounds like the image is the logo. The XP user who could view print did have the logo present. The info from the file Properties is. After upgrading to Acrobat X from 9 Professional, we frequently get the error 'Insufficient Data for Image' when opening the files in version 9 of the Reader or Professional.

The scanner is a Cannon that Adobe only recognizes has having a TWAIN driver and she is initiating the file creation from within Adobe Acrobat. We were told that the file we placed on the server was corrupted, but I can't buy that explanation since those with Acrobat X (professional or reader) don't seem to have a problem opening the same file. Anyone have any thoughts about what settings in Acrobat X need to be adjusted? Hello again, I just finished doing a fillable PDF with Acrobat 9 and I need to save it as a fillable PDF that can be saved. Thus I go to Advanced and clic on Enable Reader users to save form data, but I get a popup error that said 'Impossible to save document for Reader' I am using the Italian version of Acrobat and I translated this error - it may be different in the English version.

No code error is displayed nor a Help link. One thing worth mention: when working on this document, I often got the error 14 - Impossible to save the document. After trying another 2 or 3 times the document was saved correctly. I tried this solution: with no luck. Hello community, importing fdf data makes some trouble after updating Acrobat 8 Professional to version 8.2.1. I'm using several forms with enabled rights to save form data with Adobe Reader. This is necessary for my co-workers who only work with the Reader and also want to save form data.

In Acrobat Professional it is only allowed to import fdf data if the save rights for the Reader are disabled now. If enabled, you'll get an error message when you open an fdf file which means '.No such file or directory'. Does anyone have the same problem?

I'm sure that the problem appeared quite recently because a few weeks ago I could work with my forms without any circumstances and the 'advanced rights for Reader' were always enabled. Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think. I've got a large number of image+text multipage pdf files. Some have corrupt images. I believe the compressed image data was truncated. Reader X and Acrobat X both display 'Insufficient data for an image' when I open a bad file and scroll to the page containing the bad image.

The same thing happens if I embed the Reader control in my C# app, or use AcroAVDocClass.OpenInWindowEx. Is there any way I can detect this error from my C# code? Is it possible to parse out and expand the image directly from the PDF file?

I've been able to do this with Accusoft/Pegasus' ImageGear, but would prefer to use something less expensive. Thanks Geoff.
